Obituary of Victor Herman Sasse

Please share a memory of Victor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

NORTH RIVER: Victor H. Sasse, 95 years young, passed away at his home, surrounded by his adoring family on January 24, 2024.

Victor made his entrance into the world on July 10, 1928, born to the late Herman and Apalonia (Jung) Sasse in Englewood, NJ.  His educational journey led him through Nyack High School and Columbia University till he quickly realized his true dream was to study Forestry at the University of Tennessee.  A true trailblazer, Victor also honorably served in the United States Navy where he helped translate German war documents and worked onboard the ship Toledo, serving through the end of World War II.

Post-graduation, he established a nursery in Blauvelt, NY, concurrently taking on the role of a park ranger in Harriman State Park.  It was during this period that Victor’s path intersected with destiny, as he encountered the love of his life, Stella Hiler, on a blind date.  On February 16, 1952, Victor and Stella exchanged vows, marking the beginning of a remarkable union.  Next month they would have celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary, a testament to a lifetime filled with love, companionship, and shared interests.  Their love for the outdoors and animals formed an unspoken bond that kept them remarkably happy throughout the years.

In the late 60s, Victor and his family made a significant move to North River, NY, drawn by the opportunities presented by the newly established NYS Forest Ranger program.  Victor found himself blessed with a fulfilling career that spanned 27 years, culminating as the forest ranger for the Siamese Pond Wilderness area. Shortly after retiring, Victor wasted no time in channeling his passion into a new venture.  He founded North Country Sports, a fly-fishing shop that became a testament to his dedication to his interests and the community.

During his leisure time, Victor, an enthusiastic whistler and devote reader of non-fiction, immersed himself in various pursuits. His love for fly fishing led him to the serene waters of Siamese Pond, where he found solace and joy.  A regular participant in a weekly golf league at Cronin’s Golf Course, Victor continued to enjoy golfing with friends into the past fall.

Victor’s interests extended to the realm of sports, particularly baseball, where he ardently supported his beloved NY Yankees.  He found pleasure in watching western movies, with Cheyenne ranking as his personal favorite.  A true nature enthusiast, Victor possessed the unique ability to identify birds solely by listening to their melodic voices. Victor also took great delight in Native American Heritage, and archaeology, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of history and culture.

Victor is preceded in death by his son Kim Sasse and sister Hedy Griffen.

Surviving to honor and remember Victor are his devoted wife, Stella Sasse, residing in North River; sons Jeffrey (Lisa) Sasse of Warwick, NY, and Todd Sasse of Los Angeles, CA, along with his daughter Cindy (Todd) Zecher of Ramsey, NJ.  Victor’s impact extends to his grandchildren, Alexandra, Jade, Tristan, Beyron and Blakely. A special mention goes to his loyal dog, Shadow, who was not just a pet but truly Victor’s constant and devoted companion.

Donations in Victor’s memory can be made to the World Wildlife Fund and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
